What is Research? .. “The art of researching”
I was discussing “What is Research?” and the following idea flowed in extempore; Here is a brief summary and takeaways.
Commercial research is generally applied research, research that has direct impact on businesses unlike the “Academic Research”, which is generally a knowledge generation tool that helps in exploring a problem or a solution further.
To me “Research” seems more of an art than true science. The critical skill in any research is the ability to communicate, create content that has a narrative based on “recognition of pattern in any data” (pattern recognition). To me the most critical part in any research is “Creative writing” and “Creative Communication”, attractive and engrossing story telling based on data, data points for clear data visualization for targeted audience. In short, it is more of an art of storytelling with creative communication and expression, viz writing, data visualization and data presentation. Now with Technology, this “art of researching” is becoming a critical skill for leaders, salesmen, entrepreneurs and startups.
Good research helps is good sales positioning, be it academic research for the next grant or commercial research for business outcome!
